So it’s November, have you seen the iPhone 3.2 beta? We’ve been over this before — iPhone 2.2 beta was released on September 25, 2008 and the final version was made available on November 21. So where’s 3.2?
Yes, Apple hasn’t announced iPhone 3.2, so we can’t really call it delayed, but then Apple never announces anything in advance — all we have are historical patterns and market realities.
Was Apple waiting to integrate iTunes LP and iTunes Extras? They’ve done that for Apple TV 3.0 already. Where’s the iPhone and iPod touch love?
We’ve already postulated what other features they could be exploring, including Google Maps updates with Latitude (and now, of course, Google Maps Navigation), but given the strained relations, rejection of the former, and brand-new beta status of the latter, 3.2 might be too early. Likewise, Zune HD competitive features like 720p video out.
With the onslaught of new Android software, like HTC Sense UI, MotoBlur, and Android 2.0, could Apple have decided to raise the level of this update? A few minor tweaks were certainly possible for a standard schedule iPhone 3.2, but would Apple delay their frequent update cycle in order to make a more impressive version?
We’re not going to get our hopes up, but if Apple is getting ambitious, if Scott Forstall and team are going to “blow us away”, we’re willing wait. If not, then where is it?

It seems iPhone 3.1 users, mostly iPhone 3G users from what we can make out, are experiencing random freezes and complete shutdowns of their iPhones, and nothing, not reboots, not restores are fixing it.
We did hear a few accounts of freezes during the 3.1 beta on all versions of the iPhone, but that’s the point of betas — to identify and fix bugs before the software goes primetime. Seemingly random, intermittent bugs, however, can be some of the toughest to figure out, especially for users, so if you’re suffering from randomly freezing or shutting-down iPhones, let us know which device, and any pertinent details like clean 3.1 install, restore from backup, etc. and if you’ve stumbled onto any fixes of the more-than-temporary variety, please do share in the comment box so we can submit the results to the Apple Corp.

The Dev Team have updated their blog to let the jailbreakers of the world know how to go about jailbreaking iPhone 3.1. It seems as if Apple has really thrown a monkey wrench into jailbreaking the 3.1 software, however, so sit tight as this may be a bit confusing…

First and foremost they have released the PwnageTool 3.1 for Mac OS X that should only be used with the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. Sorry 3GS owners, you’ll have to wait. Be sure to heed some of the Dev Teams warnings before attempting to jailbreak your device.

•If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates.
•If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw
•PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.
For the full rundown please visit the Dev Teams blog and make sure you fully understand what you are getting yourself into before attempting to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.

Apple’s Mobile Me News has posted a link to a new support article that details several improvements made to the online service following iPhone 3.1, Snow Leopard, and Windows Control Panel 5.1. Some of these are larger and already known, some smaller but still nice-to-haves:
Find My iPhone now has remote passcode lock, send sound at full volume regardless of ringer, and a warning that setting “fetch data” to manual stops Find My iPhone from working.
Calendar sync is automatic for subscribed calendars now.
MobileMe bookmarks can now be merged with local bookmarks during MobileMe setup.
For more, specifically the Snow Leopard and Windows Control Panel 1.5 updates, check out the full support article.

Apple and AT&T are reportedly in talks to add some new and exclusive features for the iPhone. According to sources claiming to be in the know about the new features, they will arrive before the end of the year.Among the features is a new voicemail setting that will allow users to disable, the custom voicemail greeting, and AT&T voice mail introduction to save people time who need to leave messages. It seems like just ringing and then dumping into voice mail could confuse callers.
Another new feature is an alert that would tell AT&T users when they are exceeding their monthly amount of anytime minutes. Neither of those features sounds like anything particularly useful to lots of users. Perhaps AT&T should concentrate on enhancing their network to support the features we already have.

Just plug in your iPhone, hit Update, sit back, and enjoy the new hawt. (Jailbreakers and unlockers should hold off unless you want to lose your jailbreak/unlock.)

Macworld ran down for you a list of likely music-related developments that we might see at next week’s “Rock ‘n Roll” Apple event: a new version of the iPod touch, an updated iTunes, and perhaps even iPod models souped up with cameras. I find myself inclined to agree with the follicularly prodigious Mr. Breen, especially given Apple’s history of iPod events. But what of the iPod’s half-sibling and partner-in-crime, the iPhone? Will it get to share in the spotlight, or will it be relegated to a backstage role?
After all, not only is the iPhone an iPod in its own right, but its software provides the basis for the next-generation of Apple’s media players—namely, the iPod touch. While I wouldn’t put my hard-earned paycheck on the suggestion that Wednesday’s event will see any new iPhone hardware, I think there’s a better-than-even chance that the Apple’s newest wunderkind will get a tip of the hat in the form of a software update.
“But it’s an iPod event!” the masses cry. “It’s about rock and roll! The Beatles! The Rolling Stones!” I hear you, my friends, but this isn’t all wild-eyed flights of fancy—there is precedent to call upon. Apple used last year’s event to announce the iPhone 2.1 update, which fixed a number of nagging problems with the 2.0 release, which Apple put out in July 2008.This year bears an uncanny resemblance to that timeline: Apple released iPhone 3.0 in June, and since then we’ve seen just a single minor update, iPhone 3.0.1, which patched a security vulnerability. Whispers of iPhone 3.1 peaked back in July, but that revision has yet to see the light of day. Wednesday’s venue seems like perfect timing.
Should iPhone 3.1 garner some stage time, what might we expect from the update? Rumors suggest a number of new features, including support for Voice Control over Bluetooth headsets, non-destructive editing of video clips, and the introduction of fraud protection for Safari. The usual collection of bug fixes and tweaks are also probable—holding your breath for any huge marquee features, however, is likely to lead to a case of hypoxaemia. Of course, this is all speculation, based on little more than reading the leaves at the bottom of this morning’s cup of English Breakfast. Perhaps iPhone 3.1 won’t be enough to merit the attention of whomever takes the stage next week, but it seems a good a time as any. Even if it doesn’t make an appearance, I’d wager we’ll see the update sooner rather than later.
