Apple refunds difference in iPad price drop

Electric Pig is confirming that Apple has agreed to refund $100 to customers that purchased an iPad in the last 14 days. If you purchased an iPad on or after February 16th, you qualify for the refund.

Apple dropped the prices on the iPad as of March 2, after the announcement of the iPad 2. Here are the new prices:

refurbished Apple iPad 32GB Wi-Fi for $429

refurbished Apple iPad 16GB Wi-Fi + 3G for $479

No need to worry about the tag “refurbished” reports are saying that most of the iPads that are refurbished just needed a replacement glass. They are pretty much a brand new iPad for much cheaper price.

FAA approves iPads for pilots

FAA approves the use of iPads to replace paper maps for pilots to use when flying. Even in the GPS era, pilots are still seen pulling behind them 20 lbs or more of maps and charts.

The Federal Aviation Administration has approved charter company Executive Jet Management to use the Apple iPad as an alternative to paper charts. After 3 months of rigorous testingof the iPad and Mobile TC, a Map app developed by aviation chartmaker Jeppesen.

This approval is only for Executive Jet Management, but will soon become the standard for all pilots. The FAA has officially made the consumer tablets avionics instruments.

Jeppesen and Executive Jet Management went through a rigorous approval process. It included rapid-decompression testing from a simulated altitude of 51,000 feet to be sure that iPad did not interfere with other critical navigation or electronic equipment on the plane.

The near future of aviation is to have an iPad installed in every plane mounted on the instrument panel.

Future iPads will have Samsung Super PLS display

The Korea Times is reporting that Samsung may be supplying LCD panels for the next iPad.

According to sources, the company, established in January 2009, is in the final stage of talks on supplying its latest LCD panels for Apples iPad 2, which is expected to be released later this year.

Apple is working with a couple suppliers of the LCD screen, including LG and others in Japan and Taiwan aside from Samsung.

It was further reported that Apple is interested in Samsung Mobile Displays Super Plane to Line Switching (PLS) displays ― first unveiled in November last year ― which enable the company to deliver more and improved viewing angles.

The advantage of the PLS display is improved viewing angles and will be 10% brighter and 15% cheaper to produce.

iOS 4.3 for iPad brings option for rotation lock or mute

The iPad will be getting the option to switch between the screen rotation lock and mute in the iOS 4.3 update. You will be able to select which function you want the switch to perform from inside the settings menu. This was a major flaw in the iOS 4.2 update and upset a lot of iPad users. Steve Jobs had originally said that is was a permanent change and that it would not be user configurable, I guess he had a change of heart.

Apple releasing Verizon compatible iPads

With the release of the CDMA iPhone, Apple is planning on releasing a Verizon compatible iPad

Verizon Wireless will sell a version of Apple Inc.’s iPad tablet computer that can connect directly to its network, posing another challenge to AT&T Inc. as the carrier’s exclusive hold on the iPhone draws to a close.

Verizon will get an embedded chip in the iPad for use on its network, Francis Shammo, chief financial officer of Verizon Communications Inc., the parent of the wireless unit, said today in an interview in New York. IPad users currently need an extra device to connect to Verizon’s network. Shammo declined to say when the change may happen.

Verizon began carrying Wi-Fi models of the iPad in late October 2010, pairing them with their MiFi mobile hotspot devices.

iCade for the iPad

CES 2011 has introduced a wide array of cool gadgets for the iPhone and iPad. Among them was one interesting product from ION Audio, the iCade for the iPad. The iCade is a miniature acrcade game controller accessory for the iPad. The iCade provides an analog interface for gameplay through a joystick and buttons connecting through Bluetooth.

iCade has also partnered with game developer Atari to offer some classic games including Asteroids along with plenty others. The iCade will be available in the Spring of 2011 and priced at $99

iPad 2 coming February 1 2011, with dual cameras and retina display

The iPad 2 will be released on February 1 according to Kevin Rose, founder of Digg. His record with Apple rumors varies from right on to completely wrong. He says he has a good source that the iPad 2 will be announced in 3-4 weeks.

The dual cameras are expected as Apple is promoting FaceTime. Not to sure on the retina display though, it all depends if Apple perfected it for the iPad screen.

The current iPad is 1024 x 768. Apple needs to double that in both directions to go Retina, which would make 2048 x 1536. At 9.7-inches. That’s more pixels than Apple’s 27-inch LED cinema display at a fraction of the seize. If Apple tries to do anything other than double the resolution, current apps would either look terrible if stretched or would have UI elements shrunken below the point of usability by boxing.

iPad 2 with FaceTime coming early?

iPad 2 with FaceTime video calling is releasing ahead of schedule according to Apple Insider, they say “a person with proven knowledge of Apple’s future product plans”. Q1 of next year, but perhaps as early as the holiday season. Apple usually locks holiday lineups in early to get ahead of the sales cycle. So if the iPad 2 is coming in time for this years holiday shopping, they should be announcing it soon.

It’s also believed that Apple may striving to embed FaceTime within its entire mobile arsenal before making good on a promissory to open up the standard to the rest of the world, thereby mitigating the market opportunity for rival tablet devices that could incorporate the technology.

FaceTime had been submitted to a standards body as an informational draft, but it is still 100% under Apple’s control, and, as Apple has never announced any plans to share control with that standards body, FaceTime is not open in the sense of, say, HTML, but more along the lines of the Flash runtime, in that others can implement, but not contribute. (I am not saying Flash is open, just that it is a mistake to refer to FaceTime as open when the protocol is solely under the control of one company.)

The Apple online store are now listing both the iPad Wi-Fi and 3G as to be shipped within 24hrs. The iPad has been a hot item even for being on the market for so long. This supply is not just for the U.S. but also international stores as well.

Playboy is coming to the iPad minus the nudity

Playboy magazine will be coming to the iPad minus the nudity. Hugh Hefner, the founder of the magazine, said on Twitter the reason for no nudity is:

Microsoft upset about Apple selling too may iPads

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, has been watching Microsoft’s mobile stumble bad since Apple has moved in on the mobile community, Ballmer gave a candid response when asked about the incredible iPad sales.

“they’ve sold certainly more than I’d like them to have sold.”

They also gave a response that Microsoft is working hard on a Windows-based alternative to the iPad.

“They’ll be shipping as soon as they are ready,” Ballmer said, offering few details on the products, which he said will come from partners, not Microsoft itself. “It is job one urgency. No one is sleeping at the switch.”

No matter what they do, I don’t believe they will ever keep up with Apple’s technology. As soon as Microsoft begins to catch up, Apple will move years ahead in technology as they have been doing for years now.
