The Survivors built in screen protector is anti-glare so there is no watermarking or rainbow effect on the screen, but it does make the Retina Display a little grainy, but nothing unbearable. The outer screen protector is smooth to the touch and easy to navigate and slide your finger around. However, the integrated screen protector reduced the sensitivity of the touchscreen more than the Otterbox Defender did in our tests. Another problem we ran into with the integrated screen protection was when we tested it with a white iPhone 4 with no screen protector installed, the integrated plastic film that covers the proximity sensor does NOT allow it to work properly. The screen stayed on during calls allowing the cheek to hit the mute and speaker buttons on the screen. In fact even when we were on a call, we covered the proximity sensor with a finger and the screen remained on. The only way we got around this problem was to either cut out a hole in the plastic over the proximity sensor or to remove the entire one piece plastic screen protection which we did and the proximity sensor then worked perfectly.



Now onto the buttons and access points. Because the Griffin Survivor is water resistant, all of the ports are covered and protected with the built in plugs that flip out when you need to access them. The home button, power/sleep and volume buttons all have great feedback and responds very well when pressed. The Camera flap on the other hand is annoying, you have to hold it out of the way while taking a photo or else it will fold over and block the view finder. In my opinion this needs to be redesigned with a way to leave the flap open while using the camera either with a snap or tuck feature.

Onto the belt clip. It seems as if Griffin focused all of their time with design of the case itself and skimped on the belt clip. The clip holds the case pretty good in normal situations, but if you are running, cycling or any other outdoor rugged activity I would not trust the clip to secure the iPhone. We tested the iPhone 4 in the Griffin Survivor when running and the iPhone worked its way out and fell to the ground. Of course the good thing is, the actual case is built like a tank so of course no damage occurred to the phone. In our opinion, the clip is in need for improvements and needs to reflect the durability of the case it is trying to secure.



The Griffin Survivor is by far the toughest case we have ever tested and possibly the most durable and toughest case on the market today for the iPhone 4. When your iPhone is secured in the Griffin Survivor you can rest assured it is well protected. The design of the Survivor case is awesome and has the look that the iPhone is wrapped in armor. The silicone is very tough and grainy so it is not a lint catcher if you choose to carry it in your pocket instead of using the included belt clip.

Here are our results:

The Griffin Survivor is highly recommended to those looking for a durable case to protect your iPhone 4. If you have the black iPhone 4, not using the belt clip and not taking a ton of pictures I think you will be totally satisfied with this case. This case gets an A++ for the protection it offers.

We reviewed the EXO8 model of the EXOvault lineup, it is created from a solid piece of billet aluminum giving it a square ultra modern look. The EXO8 is an eye catching case, people constantly mistake it for another type of phone because the EXO8 actually changes the look of the iPhone 4 rather than just looking like a protective case.

The front of the case has a perfect cutout for the screen, and two cutouts that perfectly allow normal function for the proximity sensor, speaker and front facing camera. I found that when swiping the screen from page to page and moving apps around, the screen cutout did not get in the way, it was real smooth as if there was no case on at all.

The back of the case is a solid piece of aluminum smooth to the touch, the camera and flash is neatly left exposed. I had no issues with the quality of pictures with and without the flash when the iPhone was in the case. The whole assembly is also ridiculously light, adding nearly nothing to the weight of the iPhone.

The top of the EXO8 is open to allow for access to most aftermarket headphones, the bottom of the case is cut out proportionally allowing for most styles of charging cables. You will not be able to use the standard dock for the iPhone when in the EXO8 case but removing the iPhone 4 is simple and painless.

The side of the case is completely open on both sides, allowing for easy access to the volume controls, mute switch and sim card if you needed to access it. Even with the sides of the case open the “death grip” associated with the iPhone 4 was not an issue. It is designed in such a way that there is just enough case to prevent the hands from making full contact with the antenna.

The hinge work is great, nice and smooth, you won’t even feel like it is a hinge style case until you have to remove it, it is very solid. The EXO8 is a magnetic locking mechanism that is extremely effective. During our testing of the EXO8 the case never opened unexpectedly, the magnets are VERY strong.



The inside of the EXO8 is smooth and lined with a material that prevents any metal on metal or metal on glass, the case is well thought out and designed with a tremendous attention to detail.

We tested the EXO8 with the white iPhone 4 and an anti-glare screen protector installed, the fit was perfect with absolutely no complaints.

The quality of the EXO8 case is superb, the fit and finish and attention to detail is second to none. The only issue we had with the case was a reduction in signal strength. This was only a problem when I was in a low signal area, it would drop a two bar 3G signal to one bar and a one bar 3G signal to edge and “searching”. In a full strength area there was no issue at all. 90% of the time i’m in a full signal area so the case worked perfect for me, but for those of you barely getting a signal or have spotty coverage, you may notice reception problems.

While my case was the raw aluminum style, they do also make the EXO8 in black, gray, bronze or brass; the last of which will run you a tad more than the standard $115.

The Mogo Talk XD2 is a special iPhone 4 case that fits both the AT&T and Verizon devices. It has a Bluetooth headset included which stores and charges very discreetly in the back of the case.

The ear piece is very comfortable and the sound quality on both sides of the call was excellent. The iPhone 4′s voice controls are easily activated and contacts and music can be accessed.

ID-8 did some figuring before design of the Mogo and found that Bluetooth users are most bothered by charging and misplacement of their increasingly small headsets. To those ends, the Mogo Talk XD2 is a good solution. The device can be charged by simply plugging a USB cable into the case and losing the headset is less likely because it stores conveniently in the case.

Overall, the case protects at least the back of the phone. Where it wraps around the front of the device, the plastic rises at least a couple millimeters above the screen, so if you were to drop the phone flat on its face, you could be in luck.

So if you are looking for a good quality iPhone 4 case, with a quality Bluetooth device this is the case for you. It is a major plus to have the Bluetooth device right on the back of the case when you need it and when you are looking for a place to store and charge it when not in use, it just snaps on the back very discreetly and flush.
